There's an enormous range of possibilities if you want to build your own website, depending upon your budget, available time and willingness to learn something new. You can learn HTML online through any number of educational sites, or buy some books, and then build the site yourself using only a text editor. If you want to add graphics and give your pages visual appeal you can accomplish a lot with the proper and creative use of color and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). There are also a number of resources online for free and royalty-free stock photographs you can use to breathe some life into your web pages.
You can also build your own website without knowing HTML at all, using what is called a WYSIWYG editor (What You See Is What You Get). This type of software program lets you type in your text and place images where you want them to appear on your pages without having to know, or even look at, HTML source code, much like creating a document with word processing program such as WordPerfect or Microsoft's Word. There are many software programs available that will let you do this and they come in a range of prices.
Be aware that when you create web pages using a WYSIWIG editing tool that some of them will add code to your pages, sometimes causing display problems in different browsers, or you may have trouble programming and troubleshooting CGI scripts. The more you know and understand HTML, the better control you will have over how your pages display in all the different browsers.
